NEW MYWO BOSS TAKES ON NOMINATED REPS FOR VESTING INTERESTS

elected into office, Maendeleo ya Wanawake organisation Kisii county branch has criticised some nominated MCAs to the Kisii county assembly of chasing financial interests instead of fighting for the interests of the suffering women folk at grassroots.

Speaking in Kisii town, the women leaders who were led by county chairperson Bathsheba Sanaya took issue with a recent incident where a group of nominated MCAs boycotted a workshop which had been organised by the county women representative Mary Otara at a Kisii hotel demanding Sh10,000 instead if the Sh2,000 she had set aside for their transport.

They said that the MCAs should know that Otara was elected  to represent women in the national assembly and not to mobilise them to get financial handouts from NGOs and other sources as this will not address the problems facing their colleagues in the villages.

Sanaya who represents Bobasi clan was accompanied by her vice chairperson  Esther Omari (Nyaribari), secretary Ruth Bitange (Bogetutu), vice secretary  Pauline Onderi ( Bogirango), treasurer Alice Maisiba (Bonchari) and vice treasurer Truphena Onyancha (Bomachoge).

The MYWO officials called for total respect and protection on Otara as the pillar of the women folk in the county and advised her to involve them in her functions unlike nominated MCAs who have failed to return to the regions they come from and get views and suggestions of the area residents.

As an organisation, they said that their mission will be to advocate for all categories of women whether elected or nominated to unite and promote themselves so that they can reap maximum benefits of devolution.

The leaders said that they have not seen or heard of the nominated MCAs since they were nominated by their respective political parties until recently when they heard complaints about the handouts through the media.

“Being nominated to the county assembly is privilege.  They are earning salaries out of the tax we pay and should add value to the  devolution process by tabling motions which will address women issues instead of  attacking others.
