A
supremacy contest pitting Kisii county government and the assembly is looming
following an expected report on soapstone carving sculpture project which was
to be delivered in the US but eventually ended up being stuck in Nairobi.
Speaker
of the Kisii county assembly Kerosi Ondieki directed the chairman of culture
Albert Oino in whose docket the matter falls, to table the report this week on
the progress made so far about the project.
A
sculpture of an elephant carved by
artists in Tabaka, the headquarters of the soapstone industry, is said to have
cost tens of millions of shillings to transport to the US for
the Smithsonian Folklife festivals but it is still said to be lying in Nairobi.
Oino
who represents Chitago/Borabu ward in South Mugirango constituency was given
the task after the MCA for Bassi Chache ward Catherine Manzi shocked members
when she claimed that the sculpture is lying at the Nairobi Museum because the
county and the national government disagreed on the mode of transporting the
sculpture.
The
MCA later met the chief officer for culture Beatrice Mochama who informed them
that they were preparing a report that it can be tabled the same day.
